AGENCY SUMMARY

The University of Virginia, a doctoral and research institution serving over 22,000 students, maintains an academic division as well as a large teaching hospital, the University of Virginia Medical Center.  Code of Virginia, Title 23, Chapter 22. On the undergraduate level, the University offers curricula in architecture, arts and sciences, commerce, education, engineering and applied science, leadership and public policy, and nursing. Master's and doctoral degrees are offered in fields such as accounting, arts and sciences, architecture, business administration, education, engineering and applied science, law, medicine, and nursing. The Board of Visitors may, in respect to the government and management of the University, make such regulations as it deems expedient. Code of Virginia, Title 23, Chapter 13.

The main grounds are located in Charlottesville with coursework offered throughout the Commonwealth.  Additionally, the Board of Visitors oversees the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Code of Virginia, Title 23, Chapter 22.

The board of visitors or other governing body of every state-supported institution of higher education in Virginia is authorized to establish rules and regulations for the acceptance of students; for the conduct of students and the suspension and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such rules; for the rescission or restriction of financial aid; for the employment of professors, teachers, instructors and all other employees; and for parking and traffic on property owned by the institution.  The board of visitors or other governing body is required to establish policies and procedures regarding a dependent student's receipt of mental health treatment at the student health or counseling center under certain circumstances and the release of a dependent student's educational record.

In addition, the board of visitors or other governing body is authorized to establish programs to promote compliance among students with laws relating to the use of alcoholic beverages and to establish guidelines for the initiation or induction into any social fraternity or sorority, and promote the awareness and prevention of sexual crimes committed upon students.
