AGENCY SUMMARY

James Madison University was founded in 1908, and offers 124 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees, including 8 doctoral programs.  The campus is located in Harrisonburg.  Code of Virginia, Title 23.1, Chapter 16.        

The Board of Visitors is authorized to appoint all teachers and agents and fix their salaries and generally direct the affairs of the University, confer degrees, in addition to all other powers and authority given to all boards under the provisions of the Code of Virginia. These include the power to establish rules and regulations for the acceptance of students; for the conduct of students and the suspension and dismissal of students who fail or refuse to abide by such rules; for the rescission or restriction of financial aid; for the employment of professors, teachers, instructors and all other employees; for parking and traffic on property owned by the institution; as well as the power to establish programs to promote compliance among students with laws relating to the use of alcoholic beverages; establish guidelines for the initiation or induction into any social fraternity or sorority; and promote the awareness and prevention of sexual crimes committed upon students.

The Board of Visitors is required to comply with all mandates and restrictions placed on all boards under the provisions of the Code of Virginia. These include the obligation to establish policies and procedures regarding a dependent student's receipt of mental health treatment at the student health or counseling center under certain circumstances and regarding the release of a dependent student's educational record.
