AGENCY SUMMARY
The Department of Rail and Public Transportation is subject to the policy oversight of the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The department is empowered to do all the acts necessary or convenient for establishing, maintaining, improving, and promoting public transportation, transportation demand management, ridesharing, and passenger and freight rail transportation in the Commonwealth and to procure architectural and engineering services for rail and public transportation projects. Code of Virginia, Title 33.2-283.
In addition to its general powers and enumerated statutory responsibilities, the department administers a number of state and federal funding programs to assist public transportation agencies and railroads in the operation, improvement or expansion of their services.
The department operates under the supervision of the Secretary of Transportation. Regulations and documents filed by description are available for inspection at the department's offices at 600 East Main Street, Suite 2102, Richmond, VA 23219 and on the department's website (www.drpt.virginia.gov).
