The Board of Physical Therapy is a regulatory board within the Department of Health Professions. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 25. See the summary for the department for the regulatory power applicable to all health regulatory boards. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 24.
The board is authorized to regulate the practice of physical therapy and carry out the provisions of the Code of Virginia regarding the qualifications, examination, licensure, regulation, and continuing competency of physical therapists and physical therapist assistants. The board is also authorized to certify physical therapists who meet certain criteria to provide services without referral. Code of Virginia, Title 54.1, Chapter 34.1.
