AGENCY SUMMARY

The Department of Medical Assistance Services is designated as the single state agency to prepare and administer the federal Medicaid program under Title XIX of the Social Security Act. The department is responsible for promulgating regulations to safeguard against the use or disclosure of information concerning applicants or recipients of medical assistance services for purposes not directly connected with the administration of the State Plan for Medical Assistance. Code of Virginia, Title 32.1, Chapter 10. It is also authorized to make payments for patients in state-owned medical facilities. The department has issued a state medical assistance (Medicaid) plan. The department charges $65 for copies of its Medicaid plan and updating amendments which have been federally approved. Requests for copies of the State Plan should be in writing and directed to the Regulatory Coordinator at the department's principal office.

The department may promulgate regulations for the administration of the Virginia Indigent Health Care Trust Fund. Code of Virginia, Title 32.1, Chapter 11. The department is directed to promulgate regulations for the implementation and administration of the Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) Plan, which is the Commonwealth's plan for the federal State Children's Insurance Program (SCHIP) under Title XXI of the Social Security Act. The department operates under the supervision of the Secretary of Health and Human Resources.
